MINDSET-Implementing Operations Research into the High School Curriculum

Overview

Mathematics INstruction using Decision Science and Engineering Tools (MINDSET) is a collaboration between educators, engineers and mathematicians at three universities: Wayne State University, North Carolina State University, and University of North Carolina Charlotte. The goal of this initiative is to create, implement, and evaluate a new curriculum and textbook to teach standard mathematics concepts using math-based decision-making tools for use in a non-calculus fourth-year high school mathematics course. Several states including North Carolina now require a fourth year of high school mathematics and others may require in the near future. MINDSET has three goals: Develop a curriculum that will 1) enhance students' mathematical knowledge and skills, especially their ability to formulate and solve multi-step problems and interpret results; and 2) improve students' attitude toward mathematics, especially those from underrepresented groups, thereby motivating them to study mathematics; and 3) obtain adoption at the state level of the curriculum initially in North Carolina and Michigan, then in other states.

Intellectual Merit

Combining university expertise from Education, Engineering, and Mathematics can improve mathematics learning, motivate students to study mathematics, and improve their attitude toward mathematics. The project will show students how to use mathematics to solve problems they encounter in daily life (real-world) and remove the abstractness from mathematics by moving it into the realm of students' own experiences (relevance). MINDSET will be a mathematical-based toolset useful in either college or vocational education. Through extensive evaluation, the curriculum's benefits will be validated, allowing relevant disciplines to use it in a variety of educational settings. MINDSET is the first mathematics curriculum to be developed with national support from multiple university Engineering and Operations Research departments and their respective professional societies.

Broader Impacts

Mathematical-based decision-making tools are used routinely in production, manufacturing, healthcare, banking, government agencies, insurance and food industries, in theoretical and applied science disciplines, and in all Engineering disciplines. Most are non-calculus based and build on a foundation of Algebra, probability and statistics. By grounding mathematics in decision contexts familiar to students, we can change the mindset of students, stimulating them to see the relevance of mathematics to their lives and careers. Skilled in using tools that are common to scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians, students will enter the workforce better prepared to be creative employees. By enhancing students' multi-step math problem-solving skills, MINDSET will help the transition into college Mathematics and Engineering. For those not headed into STEM degrees, industry will be able to hire more effectively trained employees with less need for on-the-job training. Further, Industrial Engineering departments enroll significantly more students from underrepresented groups (URG) than all of Engineering. Anecdotally, the applicability of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research tools to non-traditional engineering systems appears to be of interest to students from URG. We believe there is strong potential to engage and encourage high school students from URG to pursue STEM careers by teaching decision-making math skills tools through MINDSET.

Invitation to the 3rd Annual Workshop on Product Development and Systems

Engineering: "Sustainable Product Development and Innovation" on June 13, 2008

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the Third Annual Workshop on Product Development and Systems Engineering to be held on Friday, June13, 2008.

Our focus this year will be on "Sustainable Product Development and Innovation". We would very much like you and your colleagues to be part of this informal and informative gathering. The goals of the workshop are to highlight relevant practical problems and to provide opportunities for collaboration among product engineers and academics through formal presentations and panel discussion session.

The workshop agenda is attached. Please note, this year we have a special keynote speaker, Susan Cischke, Ford Motor Company’s Group Vice President: Sustainability, Environmental and Safety Engineering. Besides her Vice President’s role Susan has several other roles for Ford, such as: Liaison to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and as a Board Member of the Chicago Climate Exchange.

We have other outstanding speakers in the areas of Sustainable Product Development and Innovation, such as: Tony Posawatz, General Motor’s Vehicle Line Director for the Chevy Volt and E- Flex Propulsion Systems. Tony is the key man at GM in charge of bringing electrically driven vehicles to market. Sandy Stojkovski, Director of Vehicle Engineering for Ricardo, Inc. and leader of the Total Vehicle Fuel Economy Program.

The workshop structure is designed to provide a more informal and productive atmosphere than the typical technical society meeting. There are no parallel sessions and ample time is scheduled for discussion and brainstorming. There is no charge for attending the workshop. However, in order to help us plan the logistics, please visit our website (http://pdsec.eng.wayne.edu) for registration or reply to this e-mail as RSVP by June 9th (Monday). The availability of seat is limited, so please submit your registration form as soon as possible.

Please share the news of this upcoming event with your colleagues. If you have any questions concerning the workshop or have suggestions for other people who might be interested in attending, please contact us.

Thanks for your attention and we hope to see you on June 13th.
